COPIOSA CARE: A Redemptorist Spiritual Direction Ministry
The Redemptorist Congregation was founded in Scala, Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) for the purpose of bringing good news to the poor and most abandoned through the extraordinary preaching of parish missions. The Redemptorists began their ministry in the United States in 1832. While St. Alphonsus was concerned about having the Gospel preached to the abandoned poor, he was also devoted to the total spiritual care of God’s people by having Redemptorists offer retreats, the Sacrament of Penance, (Reconciliation), and spiritual direction.
The motto of the Redemptorists is “Copiosa Apud Eum Redemptio” meaning “With the Lord there is plentiful redemption.” The aim of Copiosa Care is to offer plentiful or abundant care through the ministry of spiritual direction.
